History of Sage

Service to others, especially those in need, is one of the most fulfilling aspects of life. This is strongly reflected in Sage Foundation‘s mission “To provide the unserved, underserved and indigent people of Arizona with quality natural and conventional healthcare.”

Founded in 2002 by Dr. Klee Bethel and Dr. Paul Mittman, Sage Foundation has grown thanks to the generous support of the community.

Dr. Bethel’s inspiration for creating Sage Foundation was born out of his frustration with patients not having the resources to seek alternative therapies. Today, Sage Foundation has exceeded his initial expectations, providing more than 7,000 patient visits per year. Dr. Mittman, President & CEO of Sonoran University of Health Sciences and a Sage Foundation Board Member, sums up the mission nicely: “Everyone deserves quality healthcare.”

Patients seen at the community clinics often include those dealing with HIV/AIDS, survivors of domestic violence, children and families living in poverty and those struggling with addiction. In the true spirit of a healer, Dr. Bethel states, “There is no judgement. Everybody is a person with a problem and we are just there to help.”

The diversity of care offered allows Sage Foundation to reach a wide variety of people in need and provide Sonoran University of Health Sciences students the experience of working with diverse patient populations. The patients of today are helping the students gain valuable experience that they can use to assist the patients of tomorrow.

Continued support from the community makes it possible to continue providing this valuable care to the underserved. A gift to Sage Foundation is eligible for the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit, allowing donors to receive a credit on their Arizona tax liability with the assurance that their funds are being used to help those in need in Maricopa County. Dr. Mittman states, “We intend to be the catalyst that helps the overall health of the community.”
