A Health Start to the Academic Year

Back to School!

Sage Foundation for Health provides funding to community clinics throughout Maricopa County which are staffed with licensed faculty physicians and third- and fourth-year medical students from Sonoran University of Health Sciences. Patients include families in low-income school districts, survivors of domestic violence, patients recovering from homelessness and trauma, individuals seeking LGBTQ+ care, and patients recovering from substance use.

Three of Sage Foundation’s community clinics provide healthcare to students and their families in districts where the majority live below the poverty line, making routine doctor visits a financial burden on their families. Access to healthcare significantly impacts students in various ways, influencing their academic performance, overall well-being, and future opportunities. Here are some key aspects:

  1. Improved Attendance:
    • Students with access to healthcare are less likely to miss school due to illness. Regular check-ups and timely treatment of acute illnesses and chronic conditions help maintain consistent school attendance.
  2. Enhanced Academic Performance:
    • Healthy students are better able to concentrate, participate, and perform academically. Proper management of conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and ADHD can reduce disruptions in learning.
  3. Preventive Care:
    • Preventive healthcare, including vaccinations, screenings, and health education, helps identify and address health issues before they become serious. This proactive approach reduces the long-term impact on students’ health and education.
  4. Nutrition and Physical Health:
    • Healthcare services often include nutritional guidance and programs that promote physical activity, which are essential for maintaining a healthy weight and overall physical health. Proper nutrition and fitness are linked to better cognitive function and energy levels.
  5. Health Education:
    • Access to healthcare includes education about healthy lifestyles, hygiene, and disease prevention. Informed students are better equipped to make healthy choices that positively impact their academic and personal lives.
  6. Reduced Stress for Families:
    • When students have reliable access to healthcare, it alleviates stress for their families. Parents and guardians can focus more on supporting their children’s education rather than worrying about medical bills or untreated health issues.
  7. Long-Term Benefits:
    • Students who have access to healthcare are more likely to carry healthy habits into adulthood, leading to better long-term health outcomes and greater economic stability. This creates a positive cycle of health and education within communities.
